How a candle burns

clipped from www.candles.org

What sort of chemical reaction occurs when a candle burns?

When you light a candle, the heat of the flame melts the wax near the wick. This melted or liquid wax is then drawn up into the wick by capillary action. The flame's heat vaporizes the liquid wax to produce water vapor and carbon dioxide (the same byproducts that humans produce when exhaling).

Candle Usage

clipped from en.wikipedia.org

Before the domestication of electricity, the candle was a common source of lighting, before, and later in addition to, the oil lamp. Due to local availability and the cost of resources, for several centuries up to the 19th century the candle was more common in northern Europe, and olive oil lamps more common in southern Europe and around the Mediterranean Sea. Candle makers were known as chandlers.

Today, the candle is usually used for their aesthetic value, particularly to set a soft, warm, or romantic ambience, and for emergency lighting during electrical power failures. The Scented candle is common in aromatherapy.

History of Candle Making

clipped from en.wikipedia.org

The candle was developed independently in many countries. The Egyptians and Cretans made the candle from beeswax, as early as 3000 BC. The early candle was made from various forms of natural fat, tallow, and wax. In the 18th century, spermaceti, an oil produced by the sperm whale, was used to produce a superior candle. Late in the 18th century, colza oil and rapeseed oil came into use as much cheaper substitutes. Paraffin was first distilled in 1830, and revolutionized candle-making, as it was an inexpensive material which produced a high-quality, odorless candle that burned reasonably cleanly. The industry was devastated soon after, however, by the distillation of kerosene (confusingly also called paraffin oil or just paraffin). This excellent fuel for lamps gave the candle its current status as a primarily decorative item.

Candle History

clipped from en.wikipedia.org

A candle is a light source usually consisting of an internal wick that rises through the center of a column of solid fuel. Prior to the mid 19th century, the candle was made from tallow (a byproduct of beef fat rendering). The fuel now is nearly always some form of wax, with paraffin wax being the most common. Gel, soy, beeswax, and a vegetable-based candle is also available.A candle manufacturer is usually known as a chandler. Various devices have been invented to secure candles into place, from simple tabletop candle holders, to elaborate chandeliers.

The History of Candles

The history of candle making does not belong to any one country as it was developed independently in many countries. The Egyptians formed candles that were make out of beeswax as early as 3000 BC. The Chinese created candles from whale fat during the Qin Dynasty (221–206 BC). In early China and Japan, tapers were made with wax from insects and seeds, wrapped in paper. In India, wax from boiling cinnamon was used for temple candles. During the first century AD, indigenous people of the Pacific Northwest fused oil from the eulachon, or "candlefish", for illumination. Excavations at Pompeii, Italy, revealed several candelabra.

3000 - 1 BC

the clay candle holders in Egypt have been found dating back to 400 BC.
Qin Shi Huang (259–210 BC) was the first emperor of the Chinese Qin Dynasty (221–206 BC). His mausoleum, which was rediscovered in the 1990s twenty-two miles east of Xi'an, contained candles made from whale fat.
In early China and Japan, tapers were made in wax from insects and seeds, wrapped in paper[citation needed].
Wax from boiling cinnamon was used for temple candles in India.

1 AD - 1500 AD

There is a fish called the eulachon or "candlefish", a type of smelt which is found from Oregon to Alaska. During the first century AD, indigenous people from this region used oil from this fish for illumination. A simple candle could be made by putting the dried fish on a forked stick and then lighting it.
Excavations at Pompeii discovered several candelabra.
Yak butter was used for candles in Tibet.
In Europe, the earliest surviving candle was discovered near Avignon in France, from the first century AD

My daughter Chelsea is out of school for the summer so she has been working with me here in the store. Isn't it funny when you own a business your kids want to work anywhere but with you LOL... she asked me yesterday if I thought the Mexican Food restaurant next door would hire her since she is only 14.. I said.. "your Mom owns a store, why would you want to work there". I guess the newness has worn off. :) Her friends still think this is the coolest thing ever and would love to work here...they tell her all the time, "I would love to work at your Mom's store"!

I just finished pouring several Paradise Bay pillars for a customer.. the store smells awesome.. I just love this scent!

My daughters...

I thought I'd share a little about my self or more about my daughters in this blog entry. First and foremost I'm a Mom.. I have two beautiful daughters... Melissa who will be 22 in October.. wow I still can't get over that.. and Chelsea who will be 15 in August and will be entering 10th grade this year. They are both the light of my life and the reason I get up and work hard every single day.
Melissa works for an up and coming interent business, she loves her job and she is very good at it. I am very proud of her and everything she is accomplishing in life.
Chelsea is my little reader, writer, actress and singer.. she is outgoing, funny, sensetive and at 14 very emotional. :) She is a gentle spirit with a brightness that shines all around her.
I'm very blessed to have

It's raining, it's pouring!

It has been raining cats and dogs here in East Texas... I think I heard on the news this morning that we have only had one day this month where it didn't rain. I love rain and we need it but I think I'm water logged and ready for some sunny weather. As you can see from the pictures taken outside of Candles By Victoria http://www.candlesbyvictoria.com things are a bit soggy!

Happy Mother's Day!!

A mother is someone who loves you
Who cares for you in every way
She sits down and listens
to what you have to say
She always thinks your beautiful
Never puts you down
She always has a smile
To wipe away your frown
A mother is someone who believes in you
Always pushes you to go far
Tells you to believe in yourself
No matter who you are
A mother is like an angel
Although without the wings
She tells you to enjoy
Lifes most smallest things
I really love my mother
She means so much to me
Mom I truly love you
And that's how it will always be.

Link Exchange Fundamentals:Getting the Most From Swapping Links

There are two critical issues associated with link exchanges:
Direct Increased Internet Visibility
Improved Search Engine Positioning

Improved Search Engine Positioning - By far the biggest advantage of exchanging links is the effect on your link popularity, and it's subsequent impact on your search engine position.
"Link popularity" refers to the total number of links or "votes" that a search engine has found for your website. The number of websites that link to your website is one of the factors that help search engines determine your relevancy for a search term. Link popularity and gaining new links from outside websites to your website have proven to be a popular concept for people seeking to improve their search engine rankings.

What is link popularity and how exactly does it work? Search engines don't just look at the content of your website to determine if you are a match for a search. They also look at the number of outside websites that can validate, by linking, that you are a good match.

Google PageRank Explained (from Google website)
Search engines have also begun to rank the importance of the sites that link to you. This means if the New York Times links to your site, your credibility is higher than if Joe's Online Newspaper provides a link to your website. Search engines also consider the text contained in the link that is pointing to your website. If the text in the links contains keywords you are trying to compete for, the search engines consider your site to have even greater credibility.

Google PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important."

Important, high-quality sites receive a higher PageRank, which Google remembers each time it conducts a search. Of course, important pages mean nothing to you if they don't match your query. So, Google combines PageRank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to your search. Google goes far beyond the number of times a term appears on a page and examines all aspects of the page's content (and the content of the pages linking to it) to determine if it's a good match for your query.

Link popularity will continue to be an essential factor in successful search engine marketing initiatives for the foreseeable future. Links are a helpful tool for search engines trying to wade through billions of documents and find ones that are relevant to their users.

How Candles By Victoria came to be...

I started making candles in 1999 for myself because I was a huge candle lover but was always disappointed in the scent throw and burn quality that I got from store bought candles, even from the upper end candle companies. So in my quest for a better burning more fragrant candle, I started Candles By Victoria. I tested for over a year until I came up with the perfect wax formulation to give a full and complete burn all the way to the bottom of the candle. Then I tested and searched for the perfect scents for our line that would give off the strongest and most fragrant aromas!!

I requested the help of my friends and family to give me honest opinions and through many months of testing and reformulating, Candles By Victoria went public in May of 2000 and has been going strong and growing ever since! In June of 2006 I opened my first retail store, from my kitchen stove seven years ago to a small workshop on my property to the now 3000 + sq. ft. retail store where CBV currently resides, dreams do come true!

Candles By Victoria is my dream and my passion, I put my entire heart and soul into this business. I make each and every candle by hand in my store. I personally pour each candle, advertise the business, create and maintain the entire website, including 99% of all the graphics you see on it. Candles By Victoria is my full time job, and my #1 priority is producing a high quality, 100% handmade candle that burns and smells amazing! Customer service is very important to me as well and we will go beyond the normal call of duty to make sure EVERY customer is satisfied with their order and the service they receive.

Ribbon Cutting

We had our offical ribbon cutting here at the store last month. A lot of folks from the Van Chamber of Commerce attened. We even made the Van Banner... it was a fun day, and get a load of the size of those scissors!

What are your favorite scents?

Tell us what you like, and share your favorites with other CBV customers.

What a week....

The heating element in my melter went out late Tuesday night. I called the manufacturer and had them over night me a new one, only to have them send me the wrong thing. They reshipped the correct item and finally today I'm back in the candle pouring business. It has been a long week not being able to pour candles.

Thank you to all of my customers who have been so kind and patient when I emailed you and told you about the delay in the shipment of your orders. I promise things are back to normal now and candles are being made and shipped out the door as we speak. :)

Have a great weekend everyone!

Victoria~

We pour candles daily

We would love to have you stop in and see us. If your in the Van Texas area feel free to come by and watch us pour candles. We would love to have you!

Spring has Sprung...

Well spring has defiantly sprung here in East Texas. After a week of rain, lots of rain, the sun is finally shining. The doors are open here at Candles By Victoria and we are scenting up the little town of Van Texas. We are located right on main st. across from the Dinner Bell. Between the Dinner Bells lunch time specials and our candles, everything in Van is smelling good.

Fragrance Lamps

Fragrance lamps, also known as effusion lamps or catalytic lamps, are the hottest new trend in home fragrance. Through the process of catalytic combustion, fragrance lamps burn a mixture of alcohol and essential fragrance oils disbursing wonderful aromas into the air. At the same time, fragrance lamps release compounds into the air that actually kill bacteria and purify the air. Following a two minute warm up period, fragrance lamps burn with no flame making them great for offices and places where burning a candle is prohibited. It typically takes about 30-45 minutes to fragrance an average size home for 4-6 hours. With every lamp purchased, we will send you a FREE 16 oz. bottle of fragrance oil.

Fragrance lamps make a wonderful gift idea for your friends, family, co-workers, new home owners, smokers, pet owners, or sales promotions. It is the perfect gift for any occasion. Give the gift of sensational fragrance!

Candles By Victoria May Newsletter

This month at CBV we are celebrating our seventh year in business! Seven years ago Candles By Victoria was just a dream, I knew that I could make a better burning more fragrant candle then what I had been purchasing. It was frustrating to me to pay for a candle that left half the wax on the side of the jar and that I could not smell no matter how close I got to it. So I decided to put my money where my mouth was and seven years later here we are.

Here at CBV we continue to strive everyday to make the best possible candle, to search for the strongest fragrances for those candles, and to offer friendly customer service, all at an affordable price. We also understand that even though we do our very best to satisfy everyone, sometimes things happen. If ever you receive anything from CBV that you are not completely satisfied with, contact us directly and we will work with you in every way possible to make you happy. I take my job and what I do very seriously, at CBV customer satisfaction is our number one goal.
